John Oldham began riding in 1975 after being introduced to trainer Herb Stevens by Eddie Arcaro. He rode races until 1992 winning over 500 races. While scoring on many stakes winners, the highlight of his racing career was being the only rider for Two-Year-Old Eclipse Champion, Rockhill Native who went on to win the Blue Grass Stakes earning top choice as the Kentucky Derby favorite. He went on to finish third in the Belmont Stakes that year. Johnny rode at over 30 racetracks around the country.

Johnny married Suzanne Picou in 1976. They became the first married couple to compete at a recognized Thoroughbred track on 9/11/1976. Johnny retired in 1992 and has worked as a tote machine technician since, employed by United Tote. He is based in Lexington, KY where he and Suzie have lived since 1976.
